Florida boat-number guide

Florida Boat Registration Numbers and Decal Requirements: 2026 Guide

Florida generally requires a state-numbered vessel to display its assigned registration number on both sides of the forward half of the boat. The characters must be readable, properly spaced, at least three inches high and strongly contrasted against the hull. The annual validation decal belongs on the port side within six inches of the registration number. Always confirm the current instructions issued with your registration before ordering or installing decals.

Florida requirements at a glance

  • Location: on both sides of the forward half of the vessel, above the waterline.
  • Direction: read from left to right.
  • Character style: bold, plain block characters that remain clearly legible.
  • Minimum height: at least 3 inches.
  • Contrast: a solid color that clearly contrasts with the hull or background.
  • Group spacing: separate the letters from the numbers with a hyphen or a space equal to the width of a letter.
  • Validation decal: renew annually and display on the port side within 6 inches of the registration number, either before or after it.

These points summarize current Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission guidance and Florida vessel-registration law. They are educational guidance, not legal advice, and rules can change.

What the finished number should look like

A Florida number normally follows a format such as FL 1234 AB or FL-1234-AB. Copy every character from the certificate exactly. Do not substitute a decorative boat-name font for the registration number. Narrow scripts, connected letters, heavy outlines or effects that obscure the solid character can reduce legibility.

For a clean result, order the port and starboard numbers as a matched pair. Pre-spaced transfer tape keeps the groups aligned while still allowing the required space or hyphen between the state prefix, number group and suffix.

Where to place the validation decal

Florida guidance places the annual validation decal on the port, or left, side of the boat within six inches of the registration number. The decal may be before or after the number. Leave room for it when measuring the available bow area instead of centering the vinyl number first and discovering there is no compliant space left.

A validation decal is not the same product as the cut-vinyl registration number. The state supplies the validation decal. Same Day Vinyl produces the custom number characters from the exact state-issued number provided by the customer.

Measure the hull before ordering

Measure the smooth, visible installation area on both sides. Photograph the hull straight on and include a ruler or known dimension. Account for rub rails, hardware, compound curves, graphics and the required validation-decal area. The complete transfer is wider than the individual characters because it includes the full number and required group spacing.

Vinyl should not be applied over wax, salt, chalky oxidation, loose paint, silicone residue or a heavily textured surface. Smooth gelcoat and stable painted surfaces commonly accept appropriately selected vinyl after proper cleaning. Send a close photo when the material or finish is uncertain.

Florida exceptions and documented vessels

Florida law lists exceptions to the state-number display requirement, including certain non-motor-powered vessels, vessels used exclusively on private lakes and ponds, qualifying out-of-state vessels temporarily in Florida and federally documented vessels. However, FWC states that a documented vessel using Florida waters may still need Florida registration and the state validation decal even though state registration numbers are not displayed in the same way.

Because documentation, state registration and tax circumstances vary, owners of documented vessels should confirm their exact obligations with FWC, FLHSMV, the local tax collector and the U.S. Coast Guard before ordering exterior identification.

Order a matched Florida number set

Send the exact registration number, hull color, preferred contrasting vinyl color, usable dimensions, quantity, deadline and clear hull photos. Same Day Vinyl will prepare a proof for review before production. Proof approval confirms the lettering being produced; the boat owner remains responsible for verifying the issued number and current display rules.

Frequently asked questions

How tall must Florida boat registration numbers be?

Does Florida require numbers on both sides of a boat?

Yes, a state-numbered vessel generally displays the assigned number on both sides of the forward half of the vessel above the waterline.

Where does the Florida validation decal go?

FWC guidance places it on the port side within 6 inches of the registration number, either before or after the number.

Can I use a custom font?
