The Common Three-Inch Standard

Many states require registration letters and numbers to be at least 3 inches high. This usually refers to the visible character height, not the overall height of transfer tape or a surrounding design.

  • Measure the actual capital letter and number height.
  • Keep every character clearly legible and unobstructed.

Character Height vs. Overall Decal Size

A 3-inch character creates a decal taller than 3 inches once transfer tape and margins are included. The complete number can also become wide, so measure the available bow area before selecting spacing or an outline.

Choosing the Right Width

Width depends on the number of characters, font proportions and required spacing. Avoid squeezing characters together simply to fit a narrow area. A plain block style usually provides the best balance of compliance and readability.
