Start With the Surface Condition
Inspect the hull, vinyl and surrounding finish before using heat or chemicals. Brittle vinyl, oxidized gelcoat and repainted areas require extra caution.
Core Display Requirements
- Wash away salt, grit and surface dirt first.
- Test heat and cleaners in a hidden compatible area.
- Lift vinyl slowly with a plastic edge, not a metal blade.
- Remove adhesive with a surface-safe product.
- Clean and dry the area completely before new installation.
Use Gentle, Controlled Heat
Moderate warmth can soften old adhesive and help vinyl release in larger pieces. Keep the heat source moving and avoid overheating fiberglass, paint, plastic fittings or inflatable materials.
Remove Residue and Check for Ghosting
Use a cleaner approved for the specific hull finish and follow its instructions. Old lettering may leave a cleaner or darker outline where surrounding material has weathered. Polishing may help, but severe oxidation may need professional correction.
Prepare for the Replacement Number
After residue is removed, clean away wax, polish and cleaner film. Confirm the surface is smooth, dry and stable before positioning the new pre-spaced registration decals.
