California boat lettering guide

California Boat Registration Number Requirements

A clear guide to California boat registration number size, placement, spacing, color contrast, and validation decal positioning.

Where California Boat Numbers Go

Display numbers on both sides of the forward half, as high above the waterline as practical. The number should remain visible, legible, and free from other markings that could make it hard to identify.

Core Display Requirements

  • Use the state prefix CF exactly as assigned on your registration.
  • Use plain block characters at least three inches high.
  • Read the complete number from left to right.
  • Use a strongly contrasting color against the hull or background panel.
  • Separate letter and number groups with hyphens or spaces equal to a character width.

Validation Decal Placement

Place the registration sticker three inches aft of the number. Install decals only after cleaning and drying the surface, and keep them visible for inspection.
