Separate repainting replacements from official decals

Illinois DNR’s FAQ directs owners whose decals were lost or removed during repainting to its duplicate-decal application process. Before ordering a refreshed graphic set, identify whether each missing item is custom registration lettering, decorative artwork or an official expiration decal. Send official replacement requests through IDNR. A vinyl graphics quote can cover the custom pieces, but it cannot replace the agency’s registration process or issue a valid expiration decal.

IDNR says watercraft without a valid hull identification number or previous registration must be inspected before applying for title and registration. If that describes your boat, follow the agency’s instructions before entering an assumed number into an artwork order. Keep photographs of existing identifiers available for the authority, but do not ask a graphics proof to establish ownership or supply a new HIN. Once the record is resolved, use the confirmed assigned text for the custom lettering proof.

List what will be removed, what the owner must retain and what the installer will replace after the coating work. Photograph both sides before work starts and record usable panel dimensions without relying on distorted perspective. Ask the installer to confirm coating compatibility, preparation and readiness before applying new vinyl. Have the proof show the complete custom lettering separately from decorative stripes or boat-name artwork. The final placement should leave room for the official decals under the applicable display guidance.

For an Illinois business refreshing several assets, create separate proof records for boats, work trucks and trailers. Use approved company wording and applicable carrier or credential text for road vehicles; use confirmed vessel text for boats. A race car or race trailer needs its own current number and sponsor instructions. Identify each file by asset, side and revision date. A shared logo may be reused, but copying the entire layout can carry the wrong identifier into a new product.

Provide a piece-by-piece list, quantities, dimensions and destination ZIP code for the Illinois shipment. Tell the reviewer whether the owner or an independent installer will inspect the package. Printed wrap panels need installer-approved panel boundaries and overlap before production. Ask for confirmed materials, freight and production timing once the proof is reviewed. Installation is arranged separately, and saving or exporting a configuration records specifications without completing a purchase or promising a delivery date.
