Follow the owner when checking an MS number

Massachusetts Environmental Police explains that the registration number is issued to the owner, rather than permanently to the vessel: it can transfer between boats for that owner but not to a new owner. Its FAQ uses the MS prefix and describes a two-inch space or hyphen between letters and numbers. A buyer should verify the newly assigned text instead of copying the previous owner’s bow lettering into a production order.

Create an owner-and-vessel check before approving artwork. Record the boat receiving the graphics, the current owner-approved number and whether the request follows a purchase or a replacement within the same owner’s fleet. Compare the certificate with the existing hull photograph and flag any difference. If an old layout is being reused for dimensions, clearly mark it as a size reference only. Ask the approver to confirm the characters in plain text as well as on the visual proof, since a familiar old number can be overlooked during a cosmetic review.

Separate ownership-sensitive identifiers from reusable branding assets. A company logo may remain consistent across several boats, while the number assignment requires a fresh check for each transaction. Keep installation labels tied to the receiving hull rather than just to the customer name. For coordinated vehicle lettering, add the truck or trailer identifier and approved company text to its own proof. If a previous graphic leaves a visible outline or damaged finish, ask the installer to assess the surface before deciding whether a small replacement or larger redesign is appropriate.
