WHAT TO CHECK.
BEFORE YOU ORDER.
Start with the researched considerations for your project. National rules remain national; your registration jurisdiction may differ from your shipping destination.
Recheck registration when a small craft gains a motor
North Dakota’s 2026–2028 guide requires registration for motor-propelled watercraft primarily used in the state and explicitly includes kayaks, canoes and pedal boats fitted with motors. A previously paddle-only setup therefore deserves a fresh registration check before ordering numbers. Confirm the applicable record with Game and Fish, then use the assigned text for the lettering proof. The configurator records a requested design; it does not decide registration eligibility or issue a certificate.
Reserve the entire number and decal area
The guide specifies plain vertical block characters at least three inches high, excluding borders and shading, on both forward sides near the bow. Letter and numeral groups need a space or hyphen as wide as an M. The official validation decal belongs within six inches of the number toward the stern. Show this area on the proof before adding decorative artwork, and follow the agency’s current display instructions for the vessel.

PROJECT BRIEF.
Make a small-hull retrofit worksheet
List the craft make, model, surface material and motor setup, then photograph both sides with rails, handles and mounting hardware visible. Measure usable flat areas directly. Identify any texture, flexible sections or existing treatment before asking whether a vinyl product suits the surface. Do not shrink the requested characters simply to fit a narrow recess. If the layout will not fit, resolve the mounting and placement approach with the authority and installer before ordering. The worksheet should record that decision instead of leaving it to the person unpacking the graphics.
Distinguish equipment labels from vessel identifiers
A small-craft project may also need owner-selected gear labels or a business logo. Keep those files separate from the registration-number artwork and identify where each item is intended to go. For a fleet, contractor or race-team order, collect truck-door text, trailer dimensions and sponsor changes in separate asset records. Reusing the approved logo can keep the appearance consistent, but each surface still needs its own size, quantity and material review. Include spare-piece requests explicitly so the quote does not assume every item belongs on the same craft.
Confirm material suitability before scheduling installation
Include surface details and close-up photographs with the North Dakota shipping ZIP code and recipient. Ask the reviewer to resolve any adhesion or preparation questions with the independent installer before production. For printed vehicle wraps in the same order, provide approved panel dimensions and seam plans as separate line items. Quote review confirms material availability, production timing and freight. Installation is arranged separately, and an exported configuration is a specification document to accompany the request rather than a completed purchase or arrival commitment.
