WHAT TO CHECK.
BEFORE YOU ORDER.
Start with the researched considerations for your project. National rules remain national; your registration jurisdiction may differ from your shipping destination.
Preserve the complete letter group on the proof
The Oregon State Marine Board specifically instructs owners whose OR numbers contain three letters to keep those letters grouped together. Compare the complete assigned text with the registration record before selecting the layout, then review the agency’s number-placement guidance. Do not drop the last letter to make a familiar template fit or insert an extra separator inside the group. Request a proof that shows every character rather than approving only a font sample.
Separate documented-vessel work from a standard bow kit
The Marine Board says documented vessels moored in Oregon waters must also register with the Board and display expiration decals on both stern sides. Its guidance distinguishes these state items from the vessel’s federal documentation marking. Confirm the vessel’s status before ordering a standard OR-number layout. Keep official decals and any permanent documentation marking outside the custom decorative-graphics specification, and direct registration or documentation questions to the responsible authority.

PROJECT BRIEF.
Create a stern layout worksheet before choosing artwork
For a boat-name or other custom stern design, photograph the rear and both rear sides with ladders, vents, platforms and existing markings visible. Measure the available areas and mark any spaces that must remain available for official items. List the exact approved wording separately from font, color and size preferences. If a name or hailing-port project is involved, have the owner confirm the applicable wording and display requirements first. A decorative vinyl proof should not be treated as certification of the vessel’s documentation.
Review number files character by character
Assign a separate proof record to each boat and have the approver read the characters against the confirmed source record. Include the side, revision and requested quantity, especially when replacing only one damaged set. For a contractor or fleet purchase, put truck identifiers and trailer branding on different records so boat-number text cannot be reused accidentally. A race-car or sponsor update needs its own approved number and artwork. Shared logos can be reused, but each asset still needs a distinct size and placement decision.
Build a quote that the receiving installer can check
Send the Oregon delivery ZIP code, contact and a package list identifying each custom piece by asset. Note existing coatings, old vinyl and planned surface work so material questions can be reviewed before production. If printed vehicle-wrap panels are included, obtain the independent installer’s dimensions and overlap plan. Quote review confirms materials, production timing and shipping charges; installation is arranged separately. Export the configuration to accompany the request, then compare the eventual proof with the same list. The export is not an order confirmation or a promised delivery date.
