01 / VIRGINIA

Check assigned numbers before a used-boat refit

Virginia DWR says existing Virginia numbers are usually reassigned to a new owner and should not be removed unless DWR assigns new numbers. Before stripping a used boat for a graphics refresh, compare its displayed number with the current registration record and resolve any discrepancy with DWR. Keep the assigned identifier separate from a new decorative boat name. A change in paint, ownership or branding is not by itself a reason to invent different registration text.

02 / VIRGINIA

Resolve difficult mounting surfaces before buying vinyl

DWR allows a backing plate on the forward half of a vessel when the hull or superstructure does not provide a visible or secure number location, including an inflatable-vessel example. The number must be visible from each side. Ask the authority about your proposed arrangement and have the installer assess the surface before ordering. Approval of a lettering proof does not establish that ordinary adhesive vinyl will remain attached to a flexible or unsuitable substrate.

PROJECT BRIEF.

Make a refit record that survives removal of old graphics

Before any approved removal work begins, photograph both sides and record the lettering dimensions, placement and complete text. Label the images with the vessel identifier and date so an old photograph cannot silently become the instruction for a new order. Give the artwork reviewer a separate list of elements to retain, replace and remove. If a surface will be refinished, have the installer confirm when it is ready to receive graphics and provide the coating manufacturer’s preparation requirements.

Separate the boat proof from the tow vehicle proof

Use distinct order lines for a vessel, trailer and work truck even when the logo is shared. Boat identification, contractor credential text and applicable USDOT identifiers serve different purposes. Supply each item’s approved wording and measured space rather than reusing a single text field. For a race trailer, identify which sponsor marks are current and who approves their placement. Keep the road-facing layout readable around doors and hardware, and review the final proof at its intended physical size.

Arrange delivery around the actual installation handoff

A Virginia order may be delivered to an owner, business or independent installer; confirm the receiving ZIP code and contact before requesting freight and timing. Provide a piece list grouped by surface, side and artwork revision. Printed wrap panels need installer-approved dimensions, overlap and panel boundaries, with installation arranged separately. Ask for a confirmed production schedule after the material and proof are reviewed. An exported configuration records specifications but does not reserve an installation slot, complete payment or guarantee arrival.
