Boat Registration Number vs. Hull Identification Number

A boat registration number and Hull Identification Number serve different purposes. Learn where each number comes from, where it is displayed and which one belongs on exterior vinyl decals.

What Is a Boat Registration Number?

A state registration number is assigned when an eligible vessel is registered. It is generally displayed on both sides of the forward portion of the vessel along with current validation decals.

Core Display Requirements

  • The registration number is issued through a state agency.
  • It commonly begins with a two-letter state abbreviation.
  • It is displayed externally in a state-required format.
  • A HIN is assigned by a manufacturer or authorized agency.
  • The HIN identifies the vessel itself and is not a bow decal.

What Is a Hull Identification Number?

The HIN is a unique vessel identifier, similar in purpose to a vehicle VIN. Manufacturer-assigned HINs generally contain 12 characters and are permanently affixed in required locations rather than ordered as decorative registration lettering.

Do Not Substitute One for the Other

The registration number, HIN, validation decal and documented-vessel markings are separate items. Use the exact number and format provided by the responsible agency and verify which markings your vessel requires.

What to Send When Ordering

For exterior boat registration decals, send the state-issued registration number exactly as shown on your paperwork, the hull color and the available installation dimensions. Do not send the HIN unless a separate marking is specifically requested.
