Boat Registration Number Requirements

Understand the common display rules for boat registration numbers, including size, placement, spacing, style and contrast. Requirements vary by state, so verify the current rules with your state boating agency before ordering.

Common Registration Number Rules

Most state-numbered vessels must display the assigned registration number on both sides of the forward half of the vessel. The number normally reads from left to right and uses clearly legible block characters that contrast with the hull.

  • Display the complete assigned number on both sides of the bow.
  • Read the number from left to right on one line.
  • Use plain, legible block-style letters and numbers.
  • Maintain strong color contrast with the hull or background.
  • Place the validation decal as directed by your state agency.

Size, Spacing and Format

Many states require characters at least 3 inches high and visible from a reasonable distance. Spaces or hyphens commonly separate the state prefix, numbers and suffix, such as FL 1234 AB. Your state’s current instructions control if they differ.

Boat registration rules are administered by state agencies and can change. Check your registration documents and the applicable state boating agency. The U.S. Coast Guard also directs boat owners to their state agency for state-numbering requirements.
