Boat Registration Number Spacing Requirements

Proper spacing makes a registration number readable and helps preserve the state-issued format. Learn how prefixes, numbers and suffixes are commonly separated before ordering vinyl boat lettering.

Keep the Assigned Number in Three Groups

State boat numbers commonly contain a two-letter state prefix, four numerals and a two-letter suffix. The groups are normally separated with spaces or hyphens, such as FL 1234 AB.

  • Keep the state prefix together as one group.
  • Separate the four-number sequence from the letters.
  • Keep the final two-letter suffix together.
  • Do not crowd characters merely to fit a narrow space.

Character Spacing vs. Group Spacing

Character spacing controls the distance between individual letters and numbers. Group spacing creates a more visible break between the state prefix, numeric sequence and suffix. Both should remain consistent across the port and starboard decals.
