Boat decal installation guide

How to Install Boat Registration Decals

Install pre-spaced boat registration decals with a clean, measured process that helps prevent crooked numbers, bubbles, weak adhesion and premature lifting.

Prepare the Hull

Choose a dry installation area out of direct spray and strong wind. Wash away dirt and salt, remove wax or oily residue with a surface-safe cleaner, and allow the hull to dry completely.

Core Display Requirements

  • Confirm the number, color, size and state-required format before installation.
  • Remove old vinyl and adhesive without damaging the hull.
  • Measure and mark a level reference line with low-tack tape.
  • Position the full transfer before peeling the backing.
  • Use firm overlapping squeegee strokes from the center outward.

Apply the Pre-Spaced Transfer

Create a tape hinge along one edge, peel the backing carefully and keep the adhesive from touching the hull early. Squeegee the transfer down gradually, then remove the application tape at a low angle.

Check Edges and Allow Adhesion

Press every edge and narrow character firmly. Avoid washing, waxing or exposing the new vinyl to heavy spray immediately after installation. Adhesive reaches stronger final bond after time on a properly prepared surface.

Know When to Stop

Do not force vinyl onto wet, chalky, heavily textured or incompatible surfaces. If the surface condition is uncertain, contact Same Day Vinyl with a close photo before applying the decals.
