What Three Inches Measures
The measurement generally refers to the visible height of the capital letters and numbers, not the total height of transfer tape, outline or margins. The completed transfer will be taller and wider than the characters alone.

Core Display Requirements
- Characters prepared at a 3-inch visible height.
- Matched port-and-starboard number set.
- Plain, readable lettering for legal identification.
- Pre-spaced groups based on the assigned number.
- High-contrast colors selected for the hull.
Confirm Your State Requirement
Many states use a minimum 3-inch standard, but format, placement and validation-decal rules vary. Verify the instructions from the agency that issued the vessel registration before ordering.
Check the Finished Width
The full width depends on the state prefix, four-number sequence, suffix, font proportions and required spacing. Measure the usable bow area instead of assuming every 3-inch number will fit.
