Nationwide truck compliance guide

USDOT Number Requirements by State

Compare federal USDOT marking rules with state-specific intrastate requirements. Rules vary by vehicle, weight, cargo, passenger capacity, and whether the operation crosses state lines.

Start With the Federal Rule

Federal rule 49 CFR 390.21 generally requires covered interstate commercial motor vehicles to display the carrier legal name or one trade name and the assigned number preceded by USDOT on both sides. Markings must contrast and remain legible from 50 feet in daylight while stationary.
